An Overview of Ulcerative Colitis Symptoms

 What Is Ulcerative Colitis?

Ulcerative colitis is an immune mediated disease that affects the large intestine, especially the colon and the rectum. It causes inflammation of the inner lining of the colon and the wall of the rectum resulting in swelling, reddening and ulceration of these structures.

How Does Ulcerative Colitis Manifest?

There is no universal manner in which ulcerative colitis manifests. It varies depending on many factors the most important of which are severity and the site of involvement by ulcerative colitis. If you are interested to know, here are the signs and symptoms of ulcerative colitis based on where it occurs in the large intestines.

  • Ulcerative proctitis

Ulcerative proctitis is considered the mildest form of Ulcerative colitis. If you are suffering from this form of ulcerative colitis, the area involved is confined to your rectum (this is the part of the large intestine closest the anus). Some people may present only with bleeding per rectum. Other people may have rectal pain and stool urgency in addition to rectal bleeding.

  • Left-sided colitis

The left side of the colon includes the rectum, the sigmoid and descending colon. Inflammation that involves these structures is what is called left-sided colitis. If you suffer from this form of ulcerative colitis, you may get frequent bouts of bloody diarrhea, cramping pain on the left abdomen and unintentional weight loss of up to than 10 percent of your usual weight.

  • Proctosigmoiditis

If only the S-shaped part of the colon called sigmoid and the part of the large intestine leading to the anus called rectum are inflamed, you have proctosigmoiditis. The symptoms of this form of ulcerative colitis include bloody diarrhea, tenesmus (inability to move the bowels despite the urge to do so) and cramping abdominal pain.

  • Pancolitis

If you have pancolitis, it means that much more than just your left colon is involved. More often, the entire colon is inflamed. Pancolitis presents with severe bouts of bloody diarrhea, severe abdominal cramps and pain, fatigue as well as significant weight loss. This form is much more severe compared to ulcerative proctitis, left-sided colitis and proctosigmoiditis, especially if the entire colon is involved.

  • Fulminant colitis

This form is rare but the severest of all the forms of ulcerative colitis. Fulminant colitis affects the entire colon and the rectum, causes extreme pain, profuse blood diarrhea. In advanced cases, dehydration, shock, and even death may result. If you have this form, you are at risk of developing complications the most common of which are toxic megacolon, colonic rupture and perforation.

You can use the above information to know exactly the form of ulcerative colitis you are suffering from. In terms of course, the disease varies greatly with periods of acute illness and remissions. Usually the severity of the condition remains the same and people with milder forms seldom develop the severer forms. There is also some long-term risk of colorectal carcinoma but this too is very rare.
